This guy sold me on his product AND convinced me to give him an extra dollar for a chicken taco. How did he do it?
It took me a minute to figure out how he did it, but when I did, I was blown away. I don’t know about you, but when I get genuinely sold on something by another person I get excited.
I mean not just a little excited – I want to high-five the person that sold me on the product or service I’m being pitched on. So here’s the story:
I was recently in Riviera Maya at a resort and I walked past a stand of souvenirs. We were on our way to see a live show and this older mexican gentleman started showing us some stuff at his mini-kiosk. We weren’t the least bit interested and to sort of get him off our backs we simply said “we’ll be back around.” He responded with “Ok, make sure you do.”
We went to see the entertainment for the evening on the resort and had a blast. On our way back he saw us and said “Hey, you’re back!” He watched our eyes very closely as we looked over his display.
He was so in tune with where our interest was, that it was crazy.
He read us and our interest like a book. The guy told us how we could use the product (leather wallet), that our friends would envy it because it was from Mexico.
He hit all of the sweet spots and with all truthfulness and genuineness.
The man also did whatever it took to get the sale and would not let us leave (or made us think that we could get the item no matter what).
He tried:
making a combo deal
asking us what it would take to buy
how much did we have to spend
and all of the other techniques that it takes sales professionals years to develop
So my question is, was this guy a sales pro, or did he just have desire to succeed in his own business and these things come naturally?
I believe his desire was to succeed and do whatever it took to get the sale. Guess what? He got the sale!
It taught me a lot seeing this guy in action.
It was raw sales technique and it worked 100%!
The best part is, after I already purchased the item that I thought I got a deal on (I’m pretty sure he still turned a good profit), he asked me for a dollar as a tip for his chicken taco later!
The gentleman knew that I was already his customer and would buy from him again. Do these techniques sound familiar to you?
